Home is Where the Heart is

The Perfect Backdrop for Your Family Photos

I shoot portraits, and as a natural extension I've started to do a lot of family photography (my clients tend to be mostly moms). Almost inevitably we have a conversation about choosing the right location. There is something interesting about family photographs in picturesque parks and sandy beaches. I've done many shoots at the top of skyscrapers in Hong Kong, and at the Bund in Shanghai. They are simply stunning locations and the images are beautiful.

Having said that, today I want to talk about an ideal location, that's closer to home. Home.

A backdrop of skyscrapers tell its own story, but there is nothing that compares with a cozy living room bathed in the warm glow of sunlight streaming through the windows, the laughter of your loved ones echoing against the familiar walls, and the genuine moments that make your house a home. Here are a few reasons why your house is the ultimate backdrop for capturing timeless family memories.

There's an ease that comes with being in familiar surroundings – children are more likely to be relaxed, and adults more inclined to let their guard down. It is easier for you to stop seeing the camera and start being yourselves.

He wouldn't sit still!

The result? Authentic, candid moments that truly reflect the spirit of your family.

Your home is a reflection of your family's unique story. From the vintage rocking chair that's been passed down through generations to the quirky wall art that your kids created in art class, each corner holds memories waiting to be captured. These personal touches add depth and meaning to your photographs, turning them into a visual narrative of your family's journey.

Everything becomes easier too when you're at home. Logistics become more manageable. You can change your clothes, touch up your make up, change your tie, shave, use familiar props (Christmas tree, anyone?), even include your dog and pet parakeet!

In the grand tapestry of family photography, your home is not just a location; it's a character in the story of your life. It provides a canvas on which the brushstrokes of your family's journey are painted. So, the next time you contemplate the perfect location for your family photographs, take a moment to look around – because the ideal backdrop might just be the place where your heart feels most at home.
